ECMS 6-1 Weekly Update: June 2nd, 2017 (End of School Year Edition)

Posted on

Happy Friday, June 2nd, 6-1 Families!

It’s hard to believe the school year is coming to a close.  This will be our last 6-1 update for the year. Please see the information below for IMPortant ECMS announcements, team announcements, and CORE updates:

  1. Yearbooks – Pre-ordered yearbooks will be given out to students on Monday, June 5th. There will be a chance for yearbook signing during EE time on Monday and Tuesday. If your student did not pre-order a yearbook but would like one, Ms. Beddoe will be available in the Media Center during EE time on Monday to sell yearbooks. Yearbooks are $45.00.  Exact cash may be brought in or a check made out to ‘Jostens’. If you have any yearbook questions or concerns, please e-mail Ms. Beddoe (tbeddoe@wcpss.net)
  2. Locker Clean Out and Lock Collection – Students will clean out their lockers on Tuesday, June 6th during EE time. They will also need to return the lock that was issued to them at the beginning of the year.  If the lock does not match the one that was assigned or it has gone missing, students will need to pay ECMS $5 to replace the lock.
  3. Return of Borrowed Materials – Any property that was borrowed from ECMS (library books, textbooks, classroom library books, etc.) needs to be returned by the last day of school. Please check-in with your students about the location of these items.
  4. Final Report Cards – Final report cards are always mailed home. Please be on the lookout for this envelope within 1-2 weeks of the last day of school.
  5. Last Day of School Activity – It’s not too late to donate prizes! We still have quite a few students still eligible. We would like to have a silent auction for the students on the last day of school, June 7th. This is an opportunity for students to use the remaining PBIS tickets they’ve earned throughout the year to bid on items. We hope to have a variety of items to bid on. These items could be old or unused items as well.  In the past we’ve had items donated like games, outdoor games/activities for the summer, books, inexpensive speakers, art supplies, etc.  If you are interested in donating, please contact Mr. Miller.
  6. Mark your calendars now for our End of the Year Celebration on the last day of school, Wednesday, June 7th beginning at 11:30am in the ECMS Auditorium. We will send home more information and invitations on Friday, June 2nd.  Students who will be receiving an award received a GOLD invitation letter in Science today. After the ceremony, you may sign your student out with their homeroom teacher to take them home early or they may stay for the remainder of the school day and report to their electives.
  7. If you are returning to ECMS next school year, the following dates have been set for Schedule Pick-Up Days in July:
    1. Tracks 1, 2 & 3 – Friday, July 7th from 1:30pm-3:30pm with the 1st Day of School being Monday, July 10th

EOG Proctor Help Needed for East Cary MS!

Posted on

Good morning,

As we are approaching the end of the school year, we are also approaching End-of-Grade testing.  In order to make testing go as smoothly as possible, we need A LOT of volunteers to help with proctoring.  Test proctors are responsible for ensuring the test administrators (teachers) are following protocol and monitoring students while they test.

Because ECMS is a year-round school, we have the pleasure of doing 2 rounds of EOG testing.  Proctors and volunteers are needed for both testing sessions.  You can help out for one morning or multiple mornings.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  The time commitment for a testing day is from 7:00am until about 11:30am/Noon.

The testing windows are as follows:

Track 1 – May 24th to June 2nd

Tracks 2, 3 & 4 – June 19th to June 29th

Please see the attached flyer for more information about how to sign-up.  If you have any questions, you can contact our Assistant Principal, Shawnya Spruill at sspruill2@wcpss.net .

Flyer for more information and/or to sign-up: EOG Flyer 1

**You do need to be cleared as a WCPSS Volunteer to help with testing.  You can sign up for the Volunteer program at any WCPSS school Monday through Friday during their office hours. You need to give at least 2 weeks for your request to be processed.

Thank you in advance from the whole staff at ECMS!

This way we can be mindful of those who need fidget tools to focus and those who are using them for other means. We do not mind the use of these fidget tools for their intended purposes, and are more than happy to accommodate those who need these tools to focus.
  4. ECMS is participating in the Cary/Apex/Morrisville Relay for Life on May 20th to 21st. Students and families may participate by joining our team as a walker, donating to our team or participating in Relay for Life Spirit Week (more information to come). Ms. Haynie will be representing 6-1 as a walker on that day so are welcome to donate to her page or the ECMS Team page.

  1. Mark your calendars now for our End of the Year Celebration on the last day of school, Wednesday, June 7th beginning at 11:30am in the ECMS Auditorium. We will send home more information and invitations on Friday, June 2nd.
  2. Please review BYOD expectations with your student. Students who violate the BYOD contract, signed by both parent and student at the beginning of the year, will be referred for a technology violation.  Also, the contract clearly states that devices should NOT be used for personal e-mail and communication during class time.  If you need to contact your student, please call the front office at (919) 466-4377 and we will relay your message to your student.  A copy of the BYOD contract can be found here: BYODpolicy-contract 2015
  3. As we move into warmer weather, we just want to remind everyone of the WCPSS School Dress Code. Teachers do have to monitor the dress code and we will ask student to change or call home if attire is not within those guidelines. Please see the policy here: http://www.wcpss.net/domain/50
  4. Students received information in Science class at the end of the 3rd quarter about ordering a FREE energy-efficient kit for your home from Duke Energy. Please ask your student for this flyer.  All of the information about the program is on the flyer.  The energy kit is free, no strings attached. We can also earn money for our school and you can have the chance to win $1,000.  East Cary has now earned $750 for having 308 families sign up so far.  We are looking to reach the next milestone of getting 400 families signed up for more money for our school.  The easiest way is to sign up at https://myenergykit.org/
  5. If your student will not be attending a WCPSS school next year, please e-mail our Data Manager, Shanthi Chundi (schundi@wcpss.net) with the following information:

    Student’s PowerSchool ID
    Student’s Complete Name
    Parent’s Complete Name
Where will the student attend for 2017-18

Once again, this is only if you already know that your student will NOT be attending a WCPSS next year.

  1. Lastly, we encourage both students and parents to review our teacher websites for lessons, homework, and resources. We update our websites daily and weekly.

CORE Updates

Math 6/6+ (Mr. Hayes) – Students will cover the following topics: Displaying Data Review, Statistical Display, Study Guide will be given with a May 4th Unit 13 Test target date.  EOG review will begin after completion of Unit 13.  Please continue to monitor your child’s effort and send any questions to me.

Science (Ms. Haynie) –  Next week, we will begin our mini-unit on Space Exploration.  We will be exploring the evolution of the space program, technology, and the benefits/spin-off technology we have because of space exploration. We will also tie in the argumentative piece students have been learning about in ELA to a space controversy – the moon landing.

Social Studies (Mr. Miller) – We will be beginning our unit on Middle Ages/Renaissance/Reformation on Monday. The major grade for this unit will be a brief assessment on May 18th. Just a reminder the Civilization Bingo Project will be due on May 19th. Students are working on this every Wednesday, but will need some time to finish at home. All projects are due here by 7:30am on May 19th.

ELA (Mrs. Gilliland) – Students have been working hard on argument writing this week. Next week, they will finish drafting, revise and edit, and send final copies to their audiences. Many students have selected family members as their audience, so you may find yourself a lucky recipient of an argumentative text!
