ECMS 6-1 Weekly Update: October 21st, 2016

Happy Friday, October 21st, 6-1 Families!

We’ve had another great week! Teachers just wanted to mention that our missing work lists have started to grow.  Please continue checking PowerSchools frequently to take care of any missing assignments.  In PowerSchools, if the assignment is missing, you will see an orange square next to the assignment as well as the grade of zero.  If an assignment has not grade posted yet, the teacher is in the process of grading and entering the grades.  You should only be concerned if the assignment says missing or has a zero.

The Fall PBIS Dance is scheduled for Friday, October 28th from 2:30-4:15pm in the ECMS gymnasium.  Tickets will be available at lunch the week of the dance beginning on Tuesday, October 25th.  The cost of the dance is $5 or 20 PBIS tickets.

ECMS is need of volunteers for Science Fair Judges in December and January.  Please see the attached document for more information about the responsibilities of science fair judges.  If you are interested in helping out or getting more information, please contact Mrs. Shandua Ellis, our STEM coordinator/Assistant Principal at .


Lastly, we encourage both students and parents to review our teacher websites for lessons, homework, and resources.  We update our websites daily and weekly.

CORE Updates

Math 6/6+ (Mr. Hayes) –  We have begun Unit 6 this week. Next week, we are beginning properties (associative, commutative, distributive, zero and identity).  Students will be having the Unit 6 Quiz on Thursday, October 27th.  Please check website for updates.

Science (Ms. Haynie) –  Next week, students will begin the 2nd Quarter unit titled “Growing and Flowing”. We will start with the mini-unit of “plant structure and function” with an emphasis on flowering plants.  We will be doing a Flower Dissection lab on Wednesday, October 26th and will need some donations of flowers.  Lilies are preferred as it is easier to see all the flower parts (stamen, pistil, sepals, petals) but any other flower that shows all the parts well works too. Please send in any flower donations by Wednesday morning.  Students will have a Flowering Plant Quiz on Tuesday, November 1st.

Students should continue working on Part C of their Science Fair project on their own.  There will no longer be class time to work on parts of the science fair project.  Students are welcome to work in the mornings or ask for working lunch if they need to get work done at school.  Part C should be completed by Friday, October 28th in order to stay on pace.  Once again, students do not have turn in each part as they finish but they are welcome to give it to Ms. Haynie to give them some feedback/corrections to make before the final product is due on Thursday, December 1st.

Social Studies (Mr. Miller) – Your child’s first major grade should be in Powerschool this week. Please look over their grades and email me with any questions. We will be working through the beliefs of Greeks, Romans, Indians, Mayans, Aztecs, and other civilizations this week.

ELA (Mrs. Gilliland) – Next week, we will focus on determining the central ideas and supporting details of informational texts. Cores 3 and 4 will have Buzz Letters due on Friday, 10/28.
