ECMS 6-1 Weekly Update: October 7th, 2016

Happy Friday, October 7th, 6-1 Families!

It’s been a great first week of the 2nd quarter! It seems students have quickly gotten back into the swing of 6th grade with ease.

Our fall field trip is coming up on Thursday, October 13th.  We would love for all of our students to wear their ECMS spirit wear t-shirts that day.  It makes it easy to keep an eye on students and it helps represent our school and team pride.  Also, If you said your student would be bringing a lunch from home, please make sure to pack their lunch with disposable items.  Please pack lunches in plastic or paper bags (no Tupperware or reusable lunch boxes). Make sure that the student’s lunch bag has their first and last name clearly written on it with permanent marker.

The Fall PBIS Dance is scheduled for Friday, October 28th from 2:30-4:15pm in the ECMS gymnasium.  Tickets will be available at lunch the week of the dance.  The cost of the dance is $5 or 20 PBIS tickets.

Our STEM Coordinator/Assistant Principal, Mrs. Shandua Ellis, is looking for volunteers who would be interested in potentially being a Science Fair judge for our two 6th grade science fairs this year.  Please see the attached document for more information.  You may contact if you have other questions or are able to volunteer your time.


Lastly, we encourage both students and parents to review our teacher websites for lessons, homework, and resources.  We update our websites daily and weekly.

CORE Updates

Math 6/6+ (Mr. Hayes) –

Oct. 10 – Group work on finding positive and negative sums on a number line; assign Common Core worksheet for independent completion.

Oct. 11 – Ordering positive and negative integers practice and examples completed; assign CC #2.

Oct. 12 – Multiplication and division of negative numbers practice and examples completed; assign CC #1.

Oct. 13 – Field Trip

Oct. 14 – Comparing and ordering integers and positive and negative integer operations review

Science (Ms. Haynie) –  Students should have their Science Topics approved by today. Students who have chosen to work in partners should turn in their Partner Contract (last page of Science Fair packet).  Part B (Title and Question) of the Science Fair packet should be completed by Friday, October 14th.  It is not mandatory for students to turn in each part for each due date but students are welcome to turn in any part, any time to receive feedback/corrections from Ms. Haynie before the final product is due.  The final Science Fair project grade will be determined by the Science Fair board turned in on Dec. 1st.  The only other part that Ms. Haynie will help students with during class time is Part C (Research, Bibliography, and Hypothesis).  All other parts should be completed outside of class time.

Next week, we will continue our mini-unit on Soil.  This mini-unit will conclude with a Quiz on Friday, October 14th.

Social Studies (Mr. Miller) – We are focusing on the Fertile Crescent. Your child has a choice to complete a project or take the unit test on October 21st. Please make sure to check my website for weekly homework and project details.

ELA (Mrs. Gilliland) – Next week, we will finish writing and peer-reviewing our non-fiction poems. We will also practice the comprehension strategy of determining important information as we read informational texts. An article of the week will go home on Monday; it will be due with thinking tracks on Friday.
