Happy Friday, August 5th, 6-1 Families!
It’s hard to believe we’ve completed a month of 6th grade already! Time flies when you are having fun. Interim reports will be sent out towards the end of next week. We will send a Remind Text on the day they are given out. Students now have access and directions for how to check their grades in PowerSchools so they should start checking their grades a few times a week.
Teachers have missing work lists posted outside their rooms by student number. Students are encouraged to check those lists often to see if they are missing any work. Please encourage your student to turn in any missing work as soon as possible. In PowerSchools, missing work is indicated by the symbol of a gold square next to the assignment. See the bottom of the PowerSchools reports for a key to what each symbol means.
Students also received a “Military Connected Students” form today. Please read through the directions and if the form applies to your family, please fill it out and have the student turn into their homeroom teacher. If it does not apply to your family, please discard the form.
Please sign up for the Remind Texts/E-mails for the 6-1 Family. You will receive daily texts at 2:15pm Monday through Friday from us to remind you about upcoming ECMS events and other important reminders specific to the 6-1 team. See the “Parent Resources” section on our 6-1 Team Website for directions.
Frequently Asked Questions (last time included in weekly update)
Q: When will we get access to PowerSchools?
A: Students received the PowerSchools/Parent Portal logins and passwords today during homeroom. We asked them to place these papers in their Homework Folder. Attached you will find FAQs and directions for how to access PowerSchools/Parent Portal.
If you have any other questions about PowerSchools, please visit the WCPSS website for PowerSchools/Parent Portal/Homebase here: http://www.wcpss.net/domain/69
If you do not have access to PowerSchool and would like to sign up, please go to the above website and click on the “Request Access” PHOTO ID FORM. You will then need to fill it out and personally return it to the ECMS Front Office with a photo ID.
Q: What if my child is absent?
A: Please send a note to your student’s homeroom teacher. This may either be via e-mail or a hand-written note. Please check each teacher’s website to see what the student missed. Students are responsible for the work that they miss. They have 2 days for each day missed upon return to school to get work made up. If you know your student will be absent ahead of time, please give us the heads up or have your student let us know so that we can give them any materials before they are absent if they are ready.
Q: What if my child needs to change their transportation plans?
A: If your student is planning on going a different way home than usual, please send a quick note to your student’s homeroom teacher either via e-mail or hand-written. This will be useful in case of an emergency. *Update: Families and parents have been doing a great job of letting us know of any transportation changes. Please keep doing so.
Q: What if I have questions or concerns I need to address with teachers?
A: Please contact your student’s homeroom teacher if you would like a conference with all the CORE teachers. Please only request conferences if you there is an issue. With 110 students on our team, “no news is good news.” We will make sure to notify you immediately if there is any academic, behavioral, or social concerns.
Math 6/6+ (Mr. Hayes) – Students will have a Unit 2 Test on Prime Factorization, GCF, and LCM on Monday. Tuesday, students will begin Unit 3 which covers Operations of Decimals.
Science (Ms. Haynie) – Students took their quiz on the Layers of the Earth today via Google Forms. Grades will be updated in PowerSchools on Monday. Next week, students will be starting to learn about Plate Tectonics. They received their 8 essential Plate Tectonics vocabulary words today after their quiz.
We do have a very tasty lab coming up towards the end of next week. This lab will model what happens to the earth as the plates move in various directions. We would love donations to help assist us with doing this lab. The following items are needed if you would like to donate:
-Box of Graham Crackers
-Can of Vanilla Frosting
-Box of Plastic Knives
-Box of Wax Paper
If you are able to donate any of the above, please send in with your student by Wednesday, August 10th.
Social Studies (Mr. Miller) – We will begin looking at different civilizations around the world. We will have a test on our Geography Unit on August 26th, which will be a major grade. No other projects will be happening this quarter.
ELA (Mrs. Gilliland) – Next week, we will continue our Building Active Readers unit with a focus on merging background knowledge with new learning while reading nonfiction text. An article of the week will go home on Monday; it will be due with thinking tracks on Friday.
As always, please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or feedback.
Have a great weekend!
