ECMS 6-1 Weekly Update: February 12th, 2016

Posted on

Happy Friday, February 12th, 6-1 Families!

These weeks are flying by! We had a great time on our field trip Monday at the Marbles IMAX and Learning Lab.  Students, teachers, and chaperones had a great experience.  Thank you again to all of our amazing chaperones who made our trip possible!

Our 2nd Semester PBIS Dance is scheduled for Friday, February 19th.  Students may purchase tickets during lunch the week of the dance.  Tickets are $5 or 25 PBIS tickets.

Please continue monitoring grades as we near the end of the quarter.  As a team, we still have quite a few missing assignments.  Remember, in Powerschools, missing assignments are indicated with the gold square.  Those assignments need to be taken care of ASAP.  Once again, if you do not see a grade (ex. –/100), that means the teacher is in the process of grading it.  It is only missing if the gold square symbol is next to the assignment.  The symbol legend is at the bottom of the grade page.  If you are having any issues or still have not signed up for a PowerSchools account, please visit this website for more information: http://www.wcpss.net/domain/69

Have you signed up for our Remind text messages this year?  If not, please use the document below.  We use this to send out important reminders for the week and for school announcements.  Expect to receive at least one text message per school day.  We also use Remind to send out important information about delays and cancellations.

Lastly, 6-1 needs tissues! We have almost depleted our supply of tissues that were sent in at the beginning of the year.  If you could send a box or two in during the next week that would be wonderful!

CORE Updates

Math 6/6+ (Mr. Hayes) – Unit 10 Testing have been completed and scores will be entered in PowerSchool when corrected.

Unit 11 begins Monday. It will focus on Area Relationships, Perimeter, Area, Circles and Circumference (including problems on coordinate planes).  Please remind students to use Blackboard for material (notes and vocabulary).  Students will need a protractor for this next unit.  Mr. Hayes has almost a class set but not quite enough for all students in a class period and each student will need one.

Science (Ms. Haynie) –  Students took their quiz on the History of the Atom on Tuesday.  Mr. Yang did give them the opportunity to correct their quiz to earn ½ their points back.  Science grades will be updated at the beginning of next week.  Students started the next subunit on “States of Matter”.

Students have their 3rd Quarter project – “Element Superheroes and Villains” due date coming up next week.  Students may use morning time, EE time, and working lunch but all other work must be done on their own.  The 3 main components are: 1) their research table, 2) their character description paragraph (6-8 sentences), and 3) their visual (drawing, model, dress-up as the character, etc.) Projects are a major grade and will be due by Thursday, Feb. 18th.  Each student will have to present their superhero or villain to the class.

Social Studies (Mr. Miller) – We wrapped up our European Middle Ages Unit on Friday. We will now be working through Ancient Africa. It should be a great time learning about Mansa Musa, the abundance of gold, and the differences between East vs. West Africa in history. Our last test will be on Ancient Africa and a tentative date is February 25th for it.

ELA (Ms. Chappell) – We have concluded a successful novel study of Flush! Next week, we will continue our study of fiction and the author’s craft by reading and analyzing a short story.
