Welcome to our 6-1 Team Green Machine!

Happy Friday, August 7th, 6-1 Families!

We are so excited to finally be a complete 6-1 team with the awesome addition of Ms. Margaret Chappell.  The students gave her a warm welcome and we are excited for the rest of the year as Team Green Machine.

CORE Updates

Math 6/6+ (Mr. Hayes) –   Students will begin their unit on Decimal Operations and Mixed Word Problems next week.  A QUIZ on these topics will be given on Thursday, August 13th.

Science (Ms. Haynie) – Students have been learning about the theories of Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics this week.  We paused the past two days to go to the Media Center to learn about how to use Student E-mail accounts and Google Classroom with Mrs. Harris.  We will continue talking about Plate Tectonics, Earthquakes and Volcanos next week.  A unit TEST for Plate Tectonics, Earthquakes and Volcanoes is tentatively set for Wednesday, August 19th.  This will be a MAJOR grade.  For all other science information, please see Ms. Haynie’s website. http://mshayniescience.weebly.com/

Thank you very much to those that donated supplies for our upcoming Edible Tectonics Lab on Tuesday.

Social Studies (Mr. Miller) – A special thanks for all the incredible projects turned in last Thursday. We only had a few students not turn theirs in.  I am hoping to have them all graded by next Friday. This week, we will begin our Ancient Middle East unit focusing on the Fertile Crescent and Egypt.  The next assessment will be a choice between a project or an essay test, both will be due on August 26th. This will be our last major grade for the quarter.  Time has really flown by this quarter! Please see Mr. Miller’s website for any other Social Studies information: http://www.mrmiller.info

ELA (Ms. Chappell) – We’ve spent the past two days in Language Arts getting to know one another and establishing routines and procedures. Next week, we will continue to build our classroom community and discuss our hopes and dreams for this year in Language Arts. We will also begin to learn about some of the reading comprehension strategies that we’ll be using this year.

While WCPSS is getting Ms. Chappell’s e-mail set-up, please feel free to send any questions or comments for Ms. Chappell to Ms. Haynie and she will forward those on to her.

Please continue checking in with your students about how the year is going and continue to check PowerSchools for updated grades and missing assignments.  PowerSchools is working to convert the letter grades to the 10-point scale.  The letter grades in PowerSchools currently reflect the 7-point scale.  Please monitor the grade percentages for now.

A: 90-100

B: 80-89

C: 70-79

D: 60-69

F: 59 and below

Thanks again for all your support and have a great weekend!

Lauren Haynie (LHAYNIE@wcpss.net)

Chad Miller (CMILLER@wcpss.net)
